If you are new to digital photography or are seeking ways to make your photos
better, then there are some ways you can start implementing in your
photo-taking skill to produce better photos.
First thing first, any seasoned photographer will agree that taking good
photos takes lots of practice, and that experience didn't occur overnight or
over just a few days. Get familiarized with your camera and experiment with the
different settings. Most, if not all, digital cameras nowadays have different
picture-taking modes, or scene modes, that will allow you to take pictures in
different settings. These modes will adjust the camera's exposure for the best
results. If it's nighttime, for example, there will be a scene mode that will
use a flash differently than when the mode is set on automatic.
If you are taking photos outdoors, the sun can be your friend or enemy.
Avoid taking pictures of your subject with the sun directly behind them, unless
you want your subject darker, or underexposed, and avoid having your subject
facing the sun. If you are snapping photos of people, they will squint from the
bright sun. Try to take pictures with natural light as much as possible. Taking
pictures at night can prove to be tricky because people will tend to stand too
close to the subject, and the result is often a very bright, overexposed photo.
As dreary as an overcast day is, sometimes it is the perfect atmosphere and
will provide the best lighting.
Sometimes, holding your camera at a slight angle, rather than perfectly
horizontal or vertical, can produce some interesting images. Depending on what
you are taking photos of, tilt the camera ever so slightly or hold it
diagonally if you are daring. Taking diagonal photos of things with solid
geometric shapes, such as homes or buildings, can produce some very attractive
images.
One important thing that a lot of photographers can forget at some time or
another is to let their creative side shine through. With standards set so
high, some will think that they have to take pictures of certain things or have
a particular style to get any kind of recognition for their work, but that
really isn't true. Take time to cultivate your talent for photography and take
photos that make you happy and feel good. Originality is hard to find these
days, so take photos of anything and everything you come across. Bring your
digital camera with you wherever you go and start experimenting!
